"I believe I've taken enough photos not to take them anymore. However, I still
take them," – Gueorgui Pinkhassov, winner of numerous photograph awards and the
only Russian member of Magnum Photos.
In 1978, Pinkhasov joined the photography section of the Moscow Union of
Graphic Artists. He received his first big break when he was noticed and
invited by director Andrey Tarkovsky to make a photo reportage about the
shooting of the film Stalker (1979). In the middle of the 1990s, he became a
member of Magnum Photos. His photographs are now constantly published in the
world press, and he actively collaborates with magazines and publications,
including The New York Times.
He describes his working method as such; "there are no discoveries without
accidents. Art is accident". He rarely plans his projects, preferring instead
to shoot by intuition, then select images and distribute them between various
projects that range from exhibitions to books. Elements of surprises and
coincidence, creativity, and professional skills are the main themes of his
lecture.
