Magnum Photos, Leica Camera and Garage Center for Contemporary Culture are
thrilled to present seven video essays created by Magnum’s photographers for
the project Magnum in Motion.
The photo essays to be screened are:
M*A*S*H Iraq by Thomas Dworzak. As the United States
military fights to gain stability in Iraq, doctors, nurses and medics are
working on the front lines to keep the casualties down. Thomas Dworzak was
embedded with the 44th Medcoms 50th and 1150th Medical unit.
The Taliban by Thomas Dworzak. The Taliban ruled
Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. Its strict version of Islam allowed no
photography or depiction of human or animal forms.
The Shipping Forecast by Mark Power. Intangible and
mysterious, familiar yet obscure, The Shipping Forecast is broadcast four times
a day on BBC Radio 4. Power's photographs are a response to the clash between
the hope-filled pictures built up in his imagination since childhood and the
harsh reality of the places he has since found in adulthood.
Niagara by Alec Soth. For Alec Soth, Niagara Falls is
not merely a tourist destination but a platform that allows him to explore
human emotions and the difficulty in sustaining the intense emotional peaks of
new love and passion.
Satellites by Jonas Bendiksen. Between 1998 and 2005,
Jonas Bendiksen traveled through the fringes of the former Soviet empire,
exploring the oblique stories of half-forgotten enclaves and restless
territories. Many of these places are quaintly obscure, but as he came to
discover, they offer stark proof that the breakup of the Soviet Union is still
a work in progress.
Double Happiness by Chien-Chi Chang. Marriage brokers
recruit young Vietnamese women to come to Ho Chi Minh City, where they are
viewed by groups of Taiwanese men. Within days of meeting, the couples will be
married.
Georgian Spring by Gueorgui Pinkhassov. A reverie
about Georgia – a place that has harbored the Argonauts, Prometheus and
God.
All films will be presented in English.
