Museum cycle. A brief history of curating. Hero №1: Walter Hopps

Anna Arutiunova
October 14, Thursday
Lecture19:00

Museum Cycle is a series of introductory sessions focusing on curators and museums. The series includes lectures about important museum buildings, strategies and curators who have influenced and shaped today’s art scene. The session is based on the book A brief history of curating (2008) by notable curator, and current co-director of the Serpentine Gallery in London, Hans-Ulrich Obrist. The book is a compilation of interviews with eleven internationally acclaimed curators – Obrist’s ‘heroes’.
The ‘hero’ of the first lecture is Walter Hopps (1932-2005), American museum director and curator of contemporary art. His testimonial in the Washington Post described him as a “sort of a gonzo museum director” - elusive, unpredictable and outlandish in his vision. Throughout his career, he founded several galleries, became the director of the Pasadena Museum of Art and later of the Washington Gallery of Modern Art. The Menil Foundation established the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement. Anna Arutiunova - historian and journalist.
