Unknown – Familiar: appropriation in the age of the internet

Uwe Wittwer
June 25, Friday
19:00

Since the late 1980s, Wittwer has found inspiration in photographs and other documents that record the events of the past years. Wittwer’s source material is carefully chosen from digital representations – images of images – which he locates in the recesses of the internet.Recurrent motifs in the artist’s oeuvre are Old Master paintings, still lifes, interiors, and the imagery of war and its aftermath. His dominant interest lies in the artistic momentum of levelling and balancing out the pictorial qualities of the source material through one of his three preferred techniques: oil painting, watercolour and inkjet printing.

Wittwer’s personal exhibition «Tainted Memory»: Art+Art Gallery, June 25 - September 15, 2010
