In cooperation with the Garage Center of Contemporary Culture and the European
Cultural Foundation, the Danube Foundation is holding a workshop on The Utopian
City during the exhibition Futurologia/ Russian Utopias at the Garage in Moscow
on 22 May 2010.
During the workshop, participants will design their own Utopian City, inspired
by their experiences, ideals and futuristic or nostalgic visions. The
introduction by the Danube team will explore the history and current ideas on
the quest for the ideal city. Themes in architecture and aesthetics will be
linked with social and political aspects of city planning. Ideas may be drawn
from the past, present or future to create the ideal city. With the help of an
extensive collection of images and drawing materials, small break-out groups
will shape their own concept of an ideal city in the form of a collage, which
will then be presented to all participants at the end of the workshop. This
will be followed by discussion between participants and a selected jury which,
after careful deliberation, will announce the winning concept. Lastly, a local
artist will create a piece of art inspired by the winning concept.
This workshop is part of a larger project to reflect the variety of European
narratives. Danube will be holding and has already held a series of workshops
in a number of European capitals, being amongst others London, Berlin,
Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo.
An exposition based on the gathered art-pieces will take place in Amsterdam,
the Netherlands in 2011. In addition, Danube will publish a book based on all
the different concepts explored during the workshop series.
