Using examples of Mark Rothko’s work, curator and art historian Alexandra
Obukhova will examine the idea of ‘abstract narrative painting’ which was being
created in the US in 1940s-1950s. Interestingly, this type of Non-objective
painting was first practiced in the US during World War II, seemingly in
opposition to the academic figurative painting propagated by the totalitarian
regimes of Europe. However, by revealing the way the artist describes his
paintings as ‘theatre pieces’ and the forms he created as his ‘actors’ there is
perhaps more to be understood from the work of Rothko and his contemporaries -
Adolph Gottlieb and Barnett Newmann.
