The concept of “paper architecture”, which stands for a sketch of a fantasy
construction, has been around for a long time. But in the Soviet Union of 1980s
the concept gained a special meaning. Not being able to realize their ideas
within the country, a generation of young and talented architects started
sending their designs to international architectural contests. As a result,
this circle of masters, held together by their strong desire to create
architecture as art, evolved into a sort of creative laboratory producing
projects far ahead of their time.
The practices of "paper architects" will be introduced to us by Yuri Avvakumov
- architect, artist and curator, author of the term "paper architecture" and
organizer of numerous exhibitions in many countries.
