Utopia and literature

round table discussion
March 20, Saturday
panel discussion17:00

The term ‘utopia’ was coined by the English lawyer and scholar Thomas More and means ‘a place that doesn’t exist’. From this point in the early 16th century, the concept of the utopia grew and this discussion, to be attended by eminent writers and philosophers, aims to trace the volatile development of utopian literature.

Moderated by Boris Kupriyanov, this event will consider questions such as, how did literature influence the social models of society? How did the genre change, reacting to the political events of history? What are the characteristics of Russian utopia? What explains the revival of the genre in the 20th and 21st centuries?
