Inappropriate Utopias
March 19, Friday

In the 1920-30s, many remarkable works of utopian film were created, despite it being an outcast genre which influenced the future generations more than its contemporaries. Film utopias of this time had a difficult fight on their way to the silver screen, as the case of Metropolis and its three subsequent reincarnations can clearly demonstrate.

We will present a mini-retrospective of these four films, followed by a lecture by film expert Alexander Kulish, which will focus on how the approach to utopia changed in the post-war years, and how utopia was interpreted in films of that period.
